DAN HERRERA
My newest work Estan de una Herencia Extraña centers around the idea of skin, and thinking about skin as a continuous surface in relationship to time and movement. The images in this series are not made with Photoshop. They are made using a modified Hasselblad film camera, and a Flatbed Scanner as the film. Experimenting with choreographed motion, I'm exploiting visual anomalies unique to kinetic scanning. Working in this way, the elasticity of both time and skin can be stretched - revealing curious illustrations of movement.

Conceptually, I’m interested in the way visual language employs and receives cultural messages. Folklore and mythology have the potential to transcend cultural boundaries with their communication of familiar, enduring messages. I inherited a passion for folkloric myth from my dad who comes from a long line of Latino storytellers. I strive to weave together my own stories using visual metaphors that invite the viewer to add their own experiences to the story.

Visually, my working process involves a chemistry of hand-made props, environments, and sculptures. I capture certain elements of these supporting materials in-camera, and then use imaging software to weave together the final picture. Each photograph is its own production, involving an intense amount of planning and attention to detail. Working this way allows me to integrate my other artistic skills including drawing, sculpting, and painting into my photographic imagery.
